About Us

Location and Size

Sekyere South District is one of the forty three (43) administrative Districts in the Ashanti Region of Ghana with a total land area of 584 square kilometers. Formerly Afigya Sekyere District, after it was created from part of the former Kwabre Sekyere District in 1988 under LI1898. On November 1, 2007, the western part of the District was divided to become the northern portion of Afigya Kwabre while the remaining part has been Sekyere South District since then. The District represents about 2.4% of the total landmass of Ashanti Region. The District lies between latitude 6o 50’N and 70 10’N and Longitude 10 40’W and 10 25’ W. The District is bounded with Ejura-Sekyedumase on the North, Mampong Municipal on the East, Sekyere East and Kwabre East on the South and Afigya Kwabre on the West. The District is now becoming one of the peripheral Districts among greater Kumasi area. This is due to increase in human settlements and upsurge of medium and small scale industries. Sekyere South covers an area of 584 sq.km, representing 2.4% of land area of the Ashanti Region (24,389 sq km). Agona is the District capital encircled by communities like Tano-Odumase, Asamang, Bipoa, Afamanaso and Jamasi. The location of the District capital makes it an epicentre of the District. The District is 41.9 km away from the regional capital, Kumasi by an asphalted road. The District capital is located on the Kumasi – Mampong highway.

Functions

The Sekyere South District Assembly is responsible for the overall development of the district. Its functions include formulating and executing plans, programs, and strategies for effective resource mobilization; promoting and supporting productive activities and social development; initiating programs for infrastructure development; and ensuring the preparation and submission of development plans and budgets to the relevant authorities.

Objectives

The objectives of the Sekyere South District Assembly include improving the quality of life for residents through sustainable development, enhancing local governance and community participation, promoting economic growth via agriculture and small-scale industries, and ensuring access to quality education, healthcare, and infrastructure.

To be a leading district assembly in Ghana, fostering sustainable development, good governance, and enhanced living standards for all residents.

Mission

To improve the quality of life in Sekyere South District through effective resource mobilization, participatory governance, and the provision of quality socio-economic services in collaboration with stakeholders.
